Before it was software, it was a prayer

Today FlockConnect Starter opens to every church. Before I tell you what it does, I want to tell you what it was before it was software.

It was a prayer.

During COVID, one of my best friends told me he felt completely isolated. Someone I was in small group with. Someone I did life with. Someone I served with. He had been a member of our church for nearly two years, and he really only knew about three people. He told me he had decided to leave.

I was heartbroken. When I brought it up to my pastors, they were heartbroken too. They had no idea. He looked fine on paper. He was showing up. He was in small group. He even served. But nobody knew he felt alone.

That problem ate at my heart. It was really heavy on me, so I prayed. Lord, how do we do a better job at stewarding relationships in our churches?

What came back was not software. It was another question. How can a pastor even know someone is isolated unless that person is actively telling them?

A friend shared some church-growth research with me. Church-growth researchers Flavil Yeakley and Win and Charles Arn found that members who form about seven real friendships in their first six months almost always stay, while members who make two or fewer tend to drift away within two years. It is not the sermon. It is not the worship. It is human connection.

And when they leave, you don't just lose a number. You lose a person. You lose their spiritual gifts, their giving, their volunteer hours, their leadership. That affects everything.

What nobody was tracking

I spent three years inside a church management software company, and I got to know those systems well. They are genuinely good at what they do. They keep careful records of who showed up and who gave, and they give a church a way to communicate from the top down.

But a church management system knows who showed up on Sunday, and it has no idea who they actually know. Top-down relationships, covered. Horizontal relationships, the relationships between members, I could not find anything that was really tracking that.

How it actually got built

This did not get built the way I planned.

I was working inside church software at the time, and I was under a lot of stress. I ended up developing shingles, and shingles at my age is not normal. The doctor said it was stress related. I used that as the marker. I felt like God was telling me, hey, you need to leave this job. This isn't the place for you.

So I left. I reached out to someone who used to lead product managers and asked him how to get into product management. He said, find something you're passionate about, and build it.

So I created a prototype and started meeting with pastors, showing them what I was building and what I wanted to accomplish through it. The support was overwhelming, and they helped shape where the product went. A lot of them said the same thing: I don't understand why this hasn't been built before. I rebuilt the whole product from the ground up this year, and my wife Melanie prayed over it with me the whole way.

FlockConnect is prayerfully and intentionally built.

What Starter gives you today

  • Log a care conversation in seconds, from your phone, in the hallway after service.
  • Assign care partners, so no one person carries the whole flock.
  • Guided care reports for the moments that matter: newcomer check-ins, reaching out after someone has been away, prayer and care needs.
  • Follow-ups that don't fall through the cracks.
  • Your people in minutes: Planning Center connects with a click, and any other system comes in from a spreadsheet export.
  • Calendar sync, so care appointments live where your week already lives.

Your members never log in and never manage an account. What your church puts in belongs to your church. Nothing is sold and nothing is advertised, and you can export it or delete it whenever you want. You can read exactly how we handle your church's information at flockconnect.com/trust-security.

What is coming

Two things I am building next. Neither one is in Starter yet.

Connection tracking, so you can see who is actually connected and who is drifting.

And Collie. Collie will be your AI sheepdog. She is not the shepherd. That is you. But she will watch the whole flock and flag who is drifting before they quietly leave, and she will never send anything or act on her own. You give the commands. She brings things to your attention, and the call is always yours.

Starter churches will be the first to get both.

The price

FlockConnect Starter is $9 a month, or $89 a year, for any church size. Everything in the tier is included. No per-person pricing.

I know that number looks low for software that holds pastoral information. It is low on purpose. The churches that need this most are exactly the ones per-member pricing shuts out.

There is a 14-day free trial, and it does not ask for a card. If FlockConnect doesn't help you care for your people, walk away. It cost you nothing.

Start today

Sign up at flockconnect.com, connect Planning Center or upload your spreadsheet, and log your first care note before Sunday.

Here are some prayer requests:

  • Pray for the churches that sign up this week.
  • Pray that FlockConnect gets into the hands of the pastors that need it.

Deeper connections lead to deeper relationships, and deeper relationships naturally lead to better discipleship. Let's make disciples and fulfill the Great Commission.
